“WEST LAKE LANDFILL: THE TRUE STORY” Bob Criss and Ed Smith on Green Time TV

Why is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) holding back information on radioactive waste in the West Lake Landfill?  Why have they not properly investigated it?  Why have no criminal charges been filed against those responsible?  Dr. Bob Criss, of Washington University’s Department of Earth and Planetary Science, and Ed Smith, Safe Energy Director of the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, discuss many problems, including the possibility that an adjacent smoldering fire in underground garbage could move into the unlined radwaste dump.  Republic Services has publicly accused Dr. Criss of “causing fear,” while EPA has claimed he is incorrect about flood risk and groundwater contamination.

Dr. Criss explains that location in a flood plain and earthquake zone could strongly affect radioactive releases.  Radiation is known to increase the likelihood of leukemia 38-fold and decrease the proportion of male babies born.  The waste in West Lake Landfill will actually increase its radioactivity for at least 9,000 years.  What can citizens do to counter the lack of transparency by the EPA regarding waste from the first nuclear experiments and bombs?  This Green Time (No. 443) features portions of “Big Picture: Atomic Battlefield.”  It is produced by the Gateway Greens in conjunction with KNLC Channel 24.  Call 314-727-8554 or contact [email protected] for info.

“WILL RUBBER MULCH MAKE YOU SAFE OR SORRY?” Donna Jones &Rachel Slaughter on Green Time TV

Did you know that rubber tires are full of toxins that are skin and eye irritants and that their chemicals can stunt the growth of plants and contaminate ground water?  For years, tires have been considered a hazardous waste.  But now, they are being ground up for rubber mulch to be put on children’s playgrounds and used in yards.  Donna Jones, Elected Member of St. Louis School Board, and University City resident Rachel Slaughter discuss dangers of rubber mulch with host Don Fitz.  They cover a variety of toxins and look at why government would encourage the use of rubber mulch.  This Green Time (No. 455) includes the short movie “The Hazards of Rubber Mulch.” It is produced by the Gateway Greens in conjunction with KNLC Channel 24.  Call 314-727-8554 or contact [email protected] for info.

“PASSIVE HOUSE: THE IDEA” Ralph Wafer and Gary Steps on Green Time TV

In 2013, St. Louis saw the construction of its first Passive House, a home that does not require central heating.  It is so well designed, insulated, and airtight that it uses about 90% less energy than similar buildings.  Interior surfaces are room temperature with no hot or cold drafts.  Architect and planner Ralph Wafer and Gary Steps, of Butterfly Energy Works, discuss how they designed the home with the floor plan the owners wanted.  The building produces more energy than it uses.  Hot water for cooking, cleaning, and bathing is delivered by a small solar thermal system.  The air exchange radically improves the cleanliness of the inbound air, while protecting the temperature and humidity.  It is highly tornado and earthquake resistant.  This Green Time (No. 439) features “Passive House Revolution.”  It is produced by the Gateway Greens in conjunction with KNLC Channel 24.  Call 314-727-8554 or contact [email protected] for info.  [Find out about the movie at http://passivehouserevolution.org/]
