“HORSE SLAUGHTERING” Bonnie Boime on Green Time TV

Did you know that America still practices horse slaughtering?  But, why, when virtually no one eats horse meat in this country?  Bonnie Boime, of St. Louis Animal Rights Team (START) and host Don Fitz discuss how horse slaughtering can ruin the environment and economy of a town where a plant is located.  They ask if laws truly require the humane slaughter of horses, how many jobs are really created, and how we can protect horses and communities from the practice.  This Green Time (No. 444) features the movies “Horse Slaughter” and “Horse Dallas Crown.”  It is produced by the Gateway Greens in conjunction with KNLC Channel 24.  Call 314-727-8554 or contact [email protected] for info.

“WEST LAKE LANDFILL: THE TRUE STORY” Bob Criss and Ed Smith on Green Time TV

Why is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) holding back information on radioactive waste in the West Lake Landfill?  Why have they not properly investigated it?  Why have no criminal charges been filed against those responsible?  Dr. Bob Criss, of Washington University’s Department of Earth and Planetary Science, and Ed Smith, Safe Energy Director of the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, discuss many problems, including the possibility that an adjacent smoldering fire in underground garbage could move into the unlined radwaste dump.  Republic Services has publicly accused Dr. Criss of “causing fear,” while EPA has claimed he is incorrect about flood risk and groundwater contamination.

Dr. Criss explains that location in a flood plain and earthquake zone could strongly affect radioactive releases.  Radiation is known to increase the likelihood of leukemia 38-fold and decrease the proportion of male babies born.  The waste in West Lake Landfill will actually increase its radioactivity for at least 9,000 years.  What can citizens do to counter the lack of transparency by the EPA regarding waste from the first nuclear experiments and bombs?  This Green Time (No. 443) features portions of “Big Picture: Atomic Battlefield.”  It is produced by the Gateway Greens in conjunction with KNLC Channel 24.  Call 314-727-8554 or contact [email protected] for info.

“DANCING RABBIT: ITS ECOLOGICAL IMPACT” Tony Sirna & Rachel Katz on Green Time TV

Through cooperation and conservation Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage has been able to dramatically reduce its environmental impact. Most of what it is doing is possible for others to do in cities or suburbs.  Co-founders Tony Sirna and Rachel Katz describe how 75 people share three vehicles and drive less than 10% of the average American.  The ecovillage meets all of its power needs through renewable energy.  Its water use is 12 gallons per person per day, 90% lower than typical in the US.  This Green Time (No. 420) includes “Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage: An Introduction.”  It is produced by the Gateway Greens in conjunction with KNLC Channel 24.  Call 314-727-8554 or contact [email protected] for info.
